In a diesel-electric locomotive, the diesel engine does not mechanically drive the wheels like a road vehicle. It drives a generator or alternator. Electrical power then feeds traction motors connected to the axles. That arrangement gives locomotives the controllable low-speed pulling force railroading demands.
A train is assembled for a purpose
Freight cars are not simply attached in random order. Railroads must consider where cars are going, where they will be switched, train length and weight, special handling requirements and the forces that develop through the train. Couplers transmit those forces from car to car.
The remarkable fail-safe idea running the length of the train
Compressed air charges the brake system throughout the train. A reduction in brake-pipe pressure causes control valves on the cars to apply the brakes from their local reservoirs. That principle means a broken train line can cause braking rather than simply eliminating the command to brake.
Moving the train is about force, not just horsepower
A heavy train on a grade can require multiple locomotives. Long trains also experience pulling and compressive forces through the couplers. Distributed power places locomotives away from the head end so power and braking effort can be applied at more than one point in the train.
Thousands of tons move only when the railroad says they may
Signals, operating rules, dispatching systems and train-control technology coordinate movements over shared track. The exact rules vary by territory and railroad, but the goal is the same: keep trains separated, route them correctly and coordinate traffic with maintenance and other movements.
The yard reorganizes the network
Cars arriving together may be headed to many different destinations. Classification yards separate and regroup cars so the next train can move them in the right direction. Smaller yards support local switching, locomotive servicing, interchange and customer work.
The railroad only earns its keep when the freight gets where it is going
Road trains cover distance; yards reorganize cars; local trains perform the final rail movement to customers. The same car can be handled by multiple crews and trains and may interchange between railroads before its journey is complete.
