How Long Does It Take a Freight Train to Stop?

A freight train cannot stop like a car. Its enormous mass, speed, grade and brake-system behavior all determine how much distance it needs.

Why freight trains need so much distance

Freight trains combine enormous mass with steel wheels rolling on steel rail. Each railcar has brakes, but slowing thousands of tons still takes distance. The engineer must also manage the train so braking forces remain controlled throughout a long consist.

What changes stopping distance?

Important factors include initial speed, track grade, train length, car and locomotive weight, the number and order of cars, brake-system characteristics and the condition of operative brakes. FRA research models these variables because stopping performance is specific to the train and operating scenario.

How the air brakes help

A conventional freight train uses compressed air through a brake pipe running the length of the train. A reduction in brake-pipe pressure commands the brakes on the cars to apply. Locomotives can also use dynamic braking, which helps control speed without relying only on friction brakes.
