A freight train is a moving system: locomotives provide tractive effort, railcars carry different commodities, air brakes control the train, and railroad operating rules determine how it moves over a route. This guide connects the most common freight-train questions into one place.

Freight train anatomy

A typical freight train may include a head-end locomotive consist, dozens or even more than a hundred railcars, an end-of-train device, and—on some trains—distributed-power locomotives placed farther back in the consist. The exact arrangement depends on tonnage, terrain, train length, cargo, route and railroad operating plan.

Quick freight-train facts

Speed: Mainline freight speeds vary by route and cargo; the Association of American Railroads says typical mainline trains operate around 40–70 mph.

Length: AAR reports a 2023 median Class I train length of 5,300 feet, while some trains are substantially longer.

Stopping: Depending on speed and load, a freight train can require more than a mile to stop.

Cargo: Freight rail moves bulk commodities, manufactured goods, automobiles, food products, chemicals, energy products and intermodal containers.
