The goal
Design track that gives trains realistic work to do. The best model railroads are not necessarily the largest or most expensive; they are the ones whose design, equipment and operation fit the owner’s space and interests.
Key practices
- Give each industry a reason to receive or ship cars
- Use runaround tracks where switching direction matters
- Avoid cramming every turnout into one area
- Provide yard leads so switching does not block the main
- Use staging to represent destinations beyond the modeled scene
- Design for the length of trains you actually run
A practical way to begin
Work on one decision at a time. Test the result before covering it with scenery or moving to the next stage. Reliability first makes every later improvement more enjoyable.
Depot rule: Build for the trains you actually want to run, not for every possibility you might someday buy.
