The goal
Turn a layout into a working transportation system with switching, schedules and train jobs. The best model railroads are not necessarily the largest or most expensive; they are the ones whose design, equipment and operation fit the owner’s space and interests.
Key practices
- Give every train a purpose
- Use car cards, waybills or a simple switch list
- Create local, through, yard and transfer jobs
- Use staging to create traffic from beyond the layout
- Balance work with the length of an operating session
- Start simple and add rules only when they improve fun
A practical way to begin
Work on one decision at a time. Test the result before covering it with scenery or moving to the next stage. Reliability first makes every later improvement more enjoyable.
Depot rule: Build for the trains you actually want to run, not for every possibility you might someday buy.
