Model Railroad Wiring

Good wiring is organized, labeled, accessible and sized for the current it must safely carry.

Bus and feeder concept

A heavier pair of bus wires carries power beneath the layout. Shorter feeder wires connect the rails to that bus at intervals. This reduces dependence on rail joiners as electrical conductors.

Power districts

Dividing a large layout into protected districts can keep one short circuit from shutting down the entire railroad. Districts also make troubleshooting easier because a fault is confined to a smaller area.

Reverse loops and wyes

Any track arrangement that turns a train back onto the same rails with polarity reversed needs special electrical treatment. DCC auto-reversers can handle the polarity swap, but gaps and boundaries must be planned correctly.

Documentation

Use consistent wire colors, terminal strips, labels and a wiring diagram. Leave service loops where components may be removed. Future-you will appreciate every label.
