The goal
Reduce derailments and uncoupling by making every car mechanically consistent. The best model railroads are not necessarily the largest or most expensive; they are the ones whose design, equipment and operation fit the owner’s space and interests.
Key practices
- Check wheel gauge and free rolling trucks
- Set coupler height with a gauge
- Use consistent wheelsets and coupler types
- Add weight carefully when a car is too light
- Make sure trucks swivel without wobbling
- Test problem cars through your sharpest curves and turnouts
