Model Railroad Sound & Lighting

Sound and lighting are most convincing when they support the scene instead of becoming the scene.

Locomotive sound

Speaker enclosure quality matters as much as speaker diameter. Seal the enclosure, avoid loose parts that buzz and match sound volume to the size of the room.

LED basics

LEDs require current limiting and correct polarity. Use warm or cool color temperatures deliberately—older incandescent-era scenes usually benefit from warmer light than modern industrial LEDs.

Structure lighting

Light selected rooms rather than every window equally. Add interior partitions or light blocks to prevent entire buildings from glowing unrealistically.

Night operation

Provide enough aisle and control-panel light for safe operation. Scenic darkness should never make it hard to see where people are walking.
