LAYOUT ROOM

Model Railroad Room Planning

The railroad room is part of the layout. Good environmental planning protects track, benchwork, electronics and scenery.

Temperature and humidity

Large swings can affect wood benchwork, track joints and scenery. A reasonably stable conditioned room is easier on the railroad than an attic, garage or basement with extreme seasonal changes.

Dust control

Finished ceilings, clean floors, filtered HVAC and covered storage reduce the amount of dust that reaches track and scenery.

Lighting

Use even room lighting for construction and maintenance, then add scene lighting for presentation. High-CRI lighting helps scenery colors look natural.

Electrical and safety

Provide accessible outlets, surge protection where appropriate, a master shutoff plan and clear aisles. Do not overload household circuits or create trip hazards with extension cords.
