OPERATIONS TOOL

Model Railroad Operations Planner

A layout becomes a railroad when cars have origins, destinations and work to do.

Give every track a purpose

Main line moves trains between places. Yard tracks classify cars. Industry tracks receive or ship specific car types. Staging represents the rest of the railroad beyond the modeled scene. An interchange creates traffic with another railroad.

Simple operating systems

You can use switch lists, car cards and waybills, timetable/train-order concepts, sequence cards or a simple written job sheet. Choose the least complicated system that still makes the session feel purposeful.

Design for the crew

Do not create more jobs than the room can physically support. Operators need aisle space, uncoupling access and a place for paperwork or throttles without blocking each other.
