Reach rule
Keep normal working reach comfortable. A deep scene may look impressive, but track near a wall becomes difficult to clean or rerail cars on. Build access hatches only when they are genuinely usable; open aisles are easier.
Layout forms
| Form | Strength | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Shelf | Excellent for switching and realistic scenes | Usually point-to-point unless connected around room. |
| Around-the-walls | Long run and efficient room use | Requires doorway solution in some rooms. |
| Peninsula | More mainline and scene depth | Consumes aisle space and increases reach planning. |
| Island / 4×8 | Simple continuous running | Needs aisle space around all sides; often inefficient in a small room. |
| Modular | Portable and expandable | Joints and standards require care. |
Plan for the future
Reserve a clean path for staging, an interchange, a branch or a future extension. Expansion is easier when it has been designed into the track plan instead of added after scenery is finished.
