How to read the number
Percent grade equals vertical rise divided by horizontal run, multiplied by 100. A 2-inch rise over 100 inches of run is a 2% grade. The formula is the same in every scale because both dimensions are measured on the model.
Practical planning bands
| Grade | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 0–1% | Very gentle; excellent for long trains and mainline appearance. |
| 1–2% | Common model railroad range; test your locomotives and longest train. |
| 2–3% | Noticeable operating penalty; helper service or shorter trains may become useful. |
| 3%+ | Steep; often best reserved for short trains, branches, logging/mining themes or deliberate operational challenge. |
Vertical transitions matter
Do not change from level track to full grade abruptly. Long locomotives and cars can bottom out, uncouple or lift wheels. Use smooth vertical easements at the top and bottom of a grade.
