DCC Programming Guide

Programming turns a decoder from a generic installation into a locomotive that behaves the way you want.

Start simple

Begin with locomotive address, normal direction, acceleration and deceleration. Save complex function mapping and speed tables until the locomotive runs reliably.

Programming track versus main

A dedicated programming track limits risk and lets many systems read decoder values. Programming on the main is convenient for targeted changes but must be used carefully so you do not alter the wrong locomotive.

Speed matching

For locomotives that will run together, match start speed, midrange and top speed under similar load. Perfect mathematical matching is less important than smooth real-world behavior through the full throttle range.

Keep records

Record decoder brand, model, address, key CV changes, sound project and installation notes. A roster saves considerable time when troubleshooting later.
