DCC & ELECTRONICS

DCC Decoder Guide

A decoder must physically fit the locomotive, electrically match the motor and lights, and provide the features you actually want.

Decoder types

Motor-only decoders control speed and lighting. Sound decoders add an audio amplifier and sound project. Function decoders can control lighting or accessories without motor control.

Before buying

Installation sequence

  1. Test locomotive on DC if appropriate and correct mechanical issues first.
  2. Isolate motor leads from track pickup where required.
  3. Install decoder and speaker securely without pinching wires.
  4. Test on a programming track before full power.
  5. Configure address, direction, acceleration and lighting.

Common mistake

DCC will not cure dirty track, binding gears, poor wheel pickup or an overloaded motor. Mechanical reliability comes first.
