Decoder types
Motor-only decoders control speed and lighting. Sound decoders add an audio amplifier and sound project. Function decoders can control lighting or accessories without motor control.
Before buying
- Identify whether the locomotive is DCC-ready and what socket or interface it uses.
- Measure available space.
- Check motor stall current on older locomotives.
- Determine whether bulbs must be replaced or current-limited.
- Confirm speaker size and enclosure space for sound installations.
Installation sequence
- Test locomotive on DC if appropriate and correct mechanical issues first.
- Isolate motor leads from track pickup where required.
- Install decoder and speaker securely without pinching wires.
- Test on a programming track before full power.
- Configure address, direction, acceleration and lighting.
Common mistake
DCC will not cure dirty track, binding gears, poor wheel pickup or an overloaded motor. Mechanical reliability comes first.
