What they did
A wreck crane could lift derailed equipment, clear wreckage and support emergency recovery work.
Why they were specialized
The loads involved were enormous, so railroads maintained dedicated cranes, support cars and crews.
Modern changes
Road cranes, sidebooms and other recovery equipment have replaced many traditional railroad wreck cranes, but preserved examples remain impressive reminders of heavy railroad engineering.
