
How a rotary plow works
The large wheel at the front cuts into snow while blades throw the snow away from the track. Traditional rotary plows usually needed locomotives to push them because the plow's own machinery powered the rotary wheel rather than propelling the train.
Where they were needed
Mountain railroads faced snowdrifts far deeper than an ordinary wedge plow could handle. Rotary plows were reserved for severe conditions where snow could block a line completely.
Why they are rare today
Modern snow-fighting methods, improved forecasting, other plow equipment and changes in railroad operations have reduced the need for rotary plows, though preserved examples remain famous pieces of railroad engineering.
