A raised glass-enclosed seating area gives passengers a view over the train and surrounding landscape. Stairs connect the dome level with the lower portion of the car.

Dome cars became closely associated with scenic long-distance travel. Railroads used them as a premium feature on routes through mountains, deserts and wide-open western landscapes.
Different dome layouts
Some cars devoted much of their upper level to sightseeing seats. Others combined domes with lounges, dining areas or sleeping accommodations below.
