A restaurant on rails

Traditional dining cars combined a kitchen and dining room in one moving car. Crews prepared and served meals while the train was underway.

Why they became iconic

Railroads used dining service as part of their brand, advertising regional dishes, fine china and attentive service.

Modern variations

Today, meal service ranges from full dining to café and flexible-dining formats depending on route and operator.
