What a coach is

A coach is a passenger car primarily arranged for seated travel. Layouts vary by era, railroad and service, from long-distance reclining-seat cars to high-capacity commuter coaches.

Long-distance vs. commuter coaches

Long-distance coaches emphasize comfort and luggage space. Commuter coaches prioritize fast loading, capacity and frequent stops.

How to identify them

Look for rows of windows, vestibule doors near the ends and an interior centered on seating rather than sleeping rooms, kitchens or observation lounges.
