What a centerbeam does
A centerbeam flatcar carries bundled building products on both sides of a tall center partition. Lumber and similar packaged materials can be secured against the center structure while remaining accessible for loading and unloading.
How to identify one
The defining feature is the tall framework or solid partition running lengthwise down the center of an otherwise open flatcar. Loads are placed on both sides of it.
Why loading balance matters
Because cargo is carried on both sides of the center structure, loading and unloading procedures are designed to keep the car stable and balanced. Railroad and shipper rules govern how these cars are handled.
Related designs
Do not confuse a centerbeam with a bulkhead flatcar, which has tall structures mainly at the ends rather than one continuous center partition.
