What a boxcar does
A boxcar is an enclosed freight car with large side doors. The enclosed body protects cargo from rain, snow, wind and debris. Boxcars have carried everything from paper and packaged goods to lumber, appliances and food products.
How to identify one
Look for a long rectangular body, a solid roof and one or more large sliding or plug doors on the sides. Door style, roof profile, length and reporting marks can help narrow down the specific car type.
Why boxcars changed
As trucking, intermodal service and specialized freight cars grew, boxcars lost some traffic they once dominated. Even so, they remain useful where enclosed loading and weather protection are important.
