What an autorack does

Autoracks transport finished motor vehicles between assembly plants, distribution centers and other points in the automotive supply chain. The rack structure carries vehicles on multiple interior levels.

How to identify one

Autoracks are among the tallest freight cars. Modern examples usually have enclosed or perforated side panels, a long rectangular body and end doors that allow vehicles to be driven through connected cars during loading.

Why they are enclosed

Earlier open racks left vehicles more exposed. Modern side panels and roofs help protect automobiles from weather, debris, vandalism and other damage in transit.

Why some look extra long

Many modern autoracks use long car bodies to maximize vehicle capacity. Their height and length make them visually distinctive even from a distance.
