Big Boy No. 4014 led Union Pacific’s first coast-to-coast steam tour for America’s 250th anniversary and made its first Northeast tour, including a Fourth of July appearance in Philadelphia. What makes 2026 unusual?

The patriotic-locomotive tradition has a famous precedent: more than 100 locomotives received special schemes around the 1976 Bicentennial. Fifty years later, multiple Class I railroads revived the idea for America’s 250th, turning working locomotives into moving commemorations.
